GLOTREC|Cat
What is GLOTREC?
„GLOTREC" stands for „Global Textbook Resource Center". The center aims to support international educational media research. To this end, GLOTREC develops multilingual and expandable digital search services that standardize and sustainably combine existing (meta)data and information on school-related educational media worldwide.
What does the GLOTREC research service offer?
GLOTREC|Cat enables,
- a parallel search in subject-relevant catalogs and databases with educational media for specific educational media or specific content, with the option to share and export search results
- intuitive search options by using a differentiated classification for educational media-related metadata
- location-independent access to over 280,000 records of educational media as well as to openly accessible digitizations and full texts from collections available worldwide
Which databases and catalogs can I find in the GLOTREC Search Service?

Would you like to draw our attention to collections of educational media?
As an information infrastructure of the GEI, GLOTREC|Cat will be systematically expanded to include further holdings in the coming years. We welcome information on holdings, collections, and institutions worldwide. Please contact the core team (the local core group) of GLOTREC at: lcg-glotrec@gei.de
Who is the GLOTREC Search Service aimed at?
The search service is aimed at all those who are scientifically active in the field of educational media. It is also available to students, teachers, and the interested public.
What are educational media-related metadata?
A search using standard search criteria such as title, names of authors, or keywords is less effective for educational media. To enable a targeted search, a differentiated classification of specific properties is used in addition to describe educational media. These are recorded as educational media-related metadata. In part, the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) of UNESCO is used for this purpose.
This includes:
- Country of Use: The country in which the educational medium was or is used is specified for international comparability according to ISO standard
- Level of Education: Specified for international comparability according to ISCED
- School Subject: Specified for international comparability according to ISCED
Special features of the Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) collection
- Country of Use: Recording of German educational media down to the state level
- Recording of the school type for German educational media according to the school system of the respective state
- Recording of the document type (textbook, curricula, teacher's guide, etc.)
What should I consider when searching?
The recording of educational media-related metadata has not been completed or carried out uniformly in all integrated catalogs and databases. This influences the result set of a search.
Export functions are available for the reuse and further processing of search results, e.g., in citation management software or as a spreadsheet (e.g., Excel). We are interested in getting to know you and your research questions. We are also happy to help you with planned data exports of over 10,000 hits. Please contact us at: lcg-glotrec@gei.de
